Mahachulalongkorn Building
Built in 1914 through the combined skills of a Thai and two foreign architects, Mahachulalongkorn Building fuses influences from the Sukothai and Sawankaloke eras of local history with Western elements. In 1987 the Association of Siamese Architects under the Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King (ASA) voted this building the best conserved for that year. Students superstitiously avoid having their photograph taken with the Phaya Naga (sea-snake) motif at the stairs for fear they consequently won’t graduate!
Getting There
Public Transport: Chulalongkorn University occupies a large area in central Bangkok and its campuses are divided by Phayathai Road. Access is possible by the BTS (Bangkok Mass Transit System) at Siam Square or the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) at Sam Yan. From the BTS a short taxi ride is recommended. From the MRT, access is possible by foot from the back of the shopping mall Chamchuri Square. Please note that traffic in this area can be dense during rush hours: between approximately 7.00-9.00 and 16.00-20.00.

From the Airport: Suvarnabhumi Airport is located 30km east of Bangkok, in Samut Prakarn province. By taxi, the journey to central Bangkok can take 40-60 minutes, depending on traffic. However, an express train now runs to Makkasan Station which is linked to BTS Phayathai in the center of the city. This journey takes less than 30 minutes.
