Wickerwork Crafts & Design

Abstract

In Thailand, there are plenty of vernacular materials as well as crafts indigenous knowhow. Some of them are still practiced in the local scale as the locals have done to earn their living, while some are further explored and creatively added with design and brand value so that they can create their chance for the new markets. The notions of conserving original crafts vs. developing it to serve the market needs are always in practice and discussion. Two of selected crafts-based products producers can be the vivid evidence of recent Thai contemporary craft scene.


Description of workshop

The one-day field trip focuses on indigenous know-how of Thai wickerwork crafts. Participants will visit 2 different crafts producers: one is ‘ Bann Bangchaocha (บ้านบางเจ้าฉ่า)’ the bamboo community enterprise which produces bamboo wickerwork products (mainly baskets, handbags and small items), and another one is Yothaka Furniture Manufacturer (โยธกา), which is Thai company whose several craft-based products (mostly furniture) have won international awards for their design excellency.

A Day to Remember Thai Arts and Crafts

Abstract

A trip to visit the Royal Arts School in the Grand Palace has been arranged for those who want to fulfill special experience about Thai way of life. In the Royal Craftswomen College, visitors will have a chance to learn traditional Thai crafts normally handle by the lady court, such as cooking and making garland. In the Royal Craftsmen College, visitors will see how Thai traditional crafts such as painting, carving, stucco, and lacquer ware are made. The trip includes royal cuisine lunch in the Craftswomen College. The agenda of this 1-day trip is mentioned below.
